If this heat is inspiring you to take a trip to the seaside, you’re probably planning some fish and chips. There’s nothing better than crunchy chips, nicely-cooked and covered in salt and vinegar, as you sit by the sea. And there’s nothing more disappointing if they turn out to be soggy. So where are the best fish and chips to be found along the coast? The National Fish and Chip Awards 2025 shortlisted 40 of the best take-aways in the UK and here’s my pick of the seaside winners:
ENGLAND
Yorkshire
Locker’s Fish & Chips, Marske by the Sea
In between Saltburn-by-the-Sea and Redcar Beach, you’ll find Marske by the Sea and Locker’s famous chunky chips.
Kent
Newington Fish Bar Ramsgate
Kent has a lot of fabulous fish and chip shops, but the best in the county goes to Newington Fish Bar in Ramsgate.
Essex
The Hook of Halstead Clacton
Clacton has long been a traditional seaside town and so it’s only right that you can get traditional chips at The Hook of Halstead.
Norfolk
French’s Fish Shop, Wells-next-the-Sea
I’ve been going to French’s fish shop since I was a child and can vouch for their crispy goodness, in what is now an upmarket holiday town.
SCOTLAND
The Wee Chippy Anstruther
This family-owned restaurant has been winning awards for years. In picturesque Anstruther, it’s worth a special visit.
Carron Fish Bar Stonehaven
Similarly, Carron Fish Bar in Stonehaven has also won a plethora of awards and is proudly the birthplace of the deep-fried Mars Bar.
WALES
Finney’s Fish and Chips, Benllech
If you are in Anglesey, make sure to head to Finney’s, which this year, won the Environment and Sustainability Award.
